Review: Anno 1789
It is a swedish tv-serie that I would say is
amazing. It is a historical drama about the last decade of the XVIII century in
Stockholm. It mix the past with romance noire. The main character is a guy
called Johan Gustav Daahd (pronounced like Dood), he works for the mayor of the
city and his duty is to solve crimes and look for criminals who have betrayed
the crown. He has to deal with an Ancient Regime’s mentality, it means the use
of torture to obtain confessions and being very brutal. Nevertheless, for him
is more important to apply the science of the crime in every situation.
On the other hand, there’s a secret complot to
overthrown the monarchy leaded by the radicals who are influenced by the French
Revolution’s ideas and the spirit of the Enlightenment. Basically the chapters
show us a dialectical battle between these two worldviews, republicans vs
monarchists. Daadh has to fight these radicals although he shares some of their
ideas.
I would like to add that the way the male characters speak Swedish is very different from the one now. They speak in a strong and authoritarian way. However, the series can be obtained with subtitles in the network. I would give 8.5/10 to this show.
